As a thermoplastic, Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) presents good stability to rigorous temperatures, UV exposition, aggressive chemical environments, and is widely used as protective materials such as coating and protective films. However, PVDF is expensive and hard to get smooth and homogenous film, so it is often blended with Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). In this paper, PVDF/PMMA and PVDF/PMMA/TiO2 are prepared, and the structure and property of the films are investigated.Structure and property of PVDF/PMMA membranes from melt-extrusion were investigated. It was indicated that the addition of PMMA could greatly improve the microstructure of PVDF membrane, it not only decreased the crystallinity of PVDF, part ofαcrystalline also transformed intoβcrystalline confirmed by IR and WXRD. TG results showed that PVDF/PMMA blends had better thermal stability than that of pure PMMA, and the thermal stability of PVDF just slightly decreased. With rheological properties, the torque of PVDF/PMMA blends changed little in a wide range of PMMA weight ratio, which was helpful to choose processing condition. The membranes also had very good mechanical properties. On the base of 70:30 weight ratio of PVDF/PMMA, TiO2 was added to get opaque film. The structure, morphology, crystalline behavior, thermal and mechanical properties of PVDF/PMMA/TiO2 film were investigated through FT-IR/ATR, SEM, XRD, DSC, TGA, Py-GC/MS, respectively. The results showed that the blended material and its film have favorable thermal and mechanical properties. The TiO2 particles finely dispersed in the composite, resulting in improvement of mechanical and processing properties of the PVDF/PMMA film. Although TiO2 can greatly narrow the thermal stable margin of PVDF, PVDF/PMMA/TiO2 composite has good thermal stability. It is demonstrated that PVDF/PMMA and PVDF/PMMA/TiO2 membranes have very good comprehensive property with bright future, they can be used as the protective backsheet for solar cell.
