With the development of society, people are increasingly concerned about the environmental problems. How to monitor the environment pollution effectively, to locate the source of pollution precisely and to report the pollution timely have come to the forefront of the scientific community recently. Recent advancement in wireless communications and electronics has enabled the development of wireless sensor networks (WSN), which have some characters such as low-power, self-organized, high reliability and self-positioning. Therefore, WSN is becoming a new way of environment monitoring.A design of the Environment Monitoring WSN's gateway with the function of self-positioning and its data terminal is introduced. Firstly, the hardware and software designs of gateway node are present. The project is expounded in detail including PCB design, software development and debugging of the whole system. The functions of gateway, such as networks organizing, data processing and node positioning are realized in terms of using ARM as processor, choosing right functional module, designing the circuit and writing the embedded application program. Then, the data terminal of WSN,with the function of data transmission and database operation,is designed。Besides, the positioning algorithm of WSN is discussed in the thesis. With more than 3 sink nodes in a network, an improved DV-Distance positioning algorithm is introduced. The test results show that this positioning algorithm can provide approximate location for all nodes in the network.In the last part, a simulation running test for the WSN system is involved. The whole system runs well and the test results meet the design expectation.
