The tailings dam is a special kind of industrial buildings. It is also the greatest potential danger of mine. The quality of its operations would not only affect the economic benefits of a mining enterprise, but would also be essential for the lives and property of downstream residents of the reservoir area and the surrounding environment. As a result of the differences in some aspects of fine tailings, such as particle composition, physical properties, etc., the stability of tailings dam would be always worse than the ordinary dam. It is not unusual in the mines at home and abroad that tailings dam caused very serious harm and damage due to the loss of the stability. Therefore, It has been much attention around the world that how to study and improve the safety and stability of tailings dams and to extend its serviceable life.Using the data from engineering survey and the methods of single stack test, geotechnical test and numerical simulation method, this thesis makes a series of analysis and research of sedimentary laws and the stability of Wenzhuang tailings dam and gave some strategies to ensure the safe construction and operation of the tailings dam. Major work and results achieved are as follows:1. According to the analysis of tailings dam accidents at home and abroad in recent years, the practical significance of the related research of tailings dam has been stated and the reasons for causing those accidents has been analyzed.2. According to the data from the feasibility study and tailings design, the tailings deposition has been measured in the single stack test. The process and the laws of deposition of tailings (the body shape, slope angle and particle composition, etc.) were studied. And then obtain the mechanical parameters of tailings through the geotechnical test. These data can be used as the basic data for analysis and prediction of the stability of the tailings dam.3. Based on the strength reduction method of FEM, numerical analysis of the target tailings dam has been carried out by ANSYS software to analyze the stability of the tailings dam under different conditions and predict the safety of operation of tailings dam in the future.
