Excess iron and manganese that are usually present as divalent ions(Fe2+ and Mn2+) is generally encountered in groundwater,iron and manganese groundwater is widely distributed in china.The presence of too high concentrations of iron and manganese in water will cause healthy,economic and technological problems.How to remove iron(Fe(â…¡)) and manganese(Mn(â…¡)) from groundwater simplely and effectively is the main problems to be solved.The development of theory and technology for Fe(â…¡) and Mn(â…¡) removal in china can be divided into three stages:natural oxidation,aeration contact oxidation and biological removal of iron and manganese.The former two methods are of complex management process,difficult operation and high operation costs.Biological method requires bacteria cultivation of higher cost,longer domestication,complex operation,so applying it in project is more difficult.In the last few years,adsorption has been shown to be a cost effective technique for the removal of Fe(â…¡) and Mn(â…¡) from wastewater and water supplies.To establish a simple,effective and practical method for removing iron(Fe(â…¡)) and manganese(Mn(â…¡)) from groundwater,batch test had been carried out to determine the potential and the effectiveness of Bio-adsorbent(Bio-F),a novel adsorbent made from biomaterial in removal of iron(Fe(â…¡)) and manganese(Mn(â…¡)) from aqueous solution.The results indicated that:(1) Kinetics data obtained for the adsorption process fitted the Lagergren First-order equation.(2) Bio-F could effectively remove both Fe(â…¡) and Mn(â…¡) from water,the maximum adsorption capacities for Fe(â…¡) and Mn(â…¡) were 4.91 mg/g and 3.80mg/g respectively.(3) The Langmuir adsorption isotherm was found to fit the experimental data derived from Fe(â…¡)(R2=0.9858)and Mn(â…¡)(R2=0.9876)removal(4) Both Fe(â…¡) and Mn(â…¡) removal inecreased with increase in solution pH range.(5) The process of adsorption of Fe(â…¡) and Mn(â…¡) from aqueous solutions by Bio-F is an endothermic process.(6) The normally presented ions in natural environment had no obvious side effect on Fe(â…¡) and Mn(â…¡) removal by Bio-F except for Ca2+,Mg2+.(7) Regeneration can be easily and effectively performed,62.3%and 63.6%regeneration efficiency for Fe(â…¡) and Mn(â…¡) was achieved after 20 times regeneration experiment.(8) Bio-F meet food grade standards with high safety.Those results indicated that Bio-F can be possibly applied in Fe(â…¡) and Mn(â…¡) removal from drinking water as a potential bio-adsorbent.
