The physical characteristics and fractal structure of granular sludge and floc sludge is studied in the paper.The granular sludge is the sludge of anaerobic baffled reactor(ABR) which was start-up in the lab.The floc sludge was got from Sewage Treatment Plant Beijing(Gaobeidian,Qinghe,and Jiuxianqiao).Indicators researched in the study is including in the mixture of sludge suspended solids(MLSS),volatile suspended solids(MLVSS),sludge settlement ratio(SV), volume index(SVI),regional velocity(ZSV),capillary suction time(CST),Bound water(BW),sludge intensity(FS),flocculation ability,surface charge,hydrophobic properties,partical size as well as the fractal dimension.The research studies the difference of compression performance,settlement performance,stability and dehydration of sludge from different types of sewage sludge treatment process and ABR,by this way,to learn the effect of physical properties and fractal structure to the water treatment.The results show as the following:(1)Analysis of sludge properies and fractal stucture shows that ABR granular sludge shows features of hight mass concentration,with rough surface(a big D1) and loose granular structure(a small D2).The different microbial environment affects the nature of the characters of sludge.Sludge settlement performance and compression performance and low-dimensional fractal(D1 and D2) of ABR had no significant contrect.Bound water(BW) and granular sludge surface(showed by D1) structure is negative relatived.BW and D2 are little related.CST has little relationship with the sludge dimentions.Flocculation ability of ABR sludge has a negative correlation with 1-dimensional sludge dimension and a positive correlation with 2-dimensional sludge dimension.Intensity value of ABR sludge is bigger in the middle compartmeht,and is smaller to the two sides.But the flocculation ability of granular sludge is smaller in the middle cell and bigger to the sides.All surface charge is negative data and bigger in the middle and smaller to the sides,the same to the intensity value.(2)Low-dimensional fractal dimensions and sludge concentrarion showed no significant correlation.ZSV of ABR granular sludge is much bigger than ZSV of wastewater treatment plant sludge(most ZSV of wastewater treatment plant sludge<0.5m.h-1).ABR has much more anti-stirred sludge particle.Flocculation value of ABR granular sludge is overall positive different from the negative value of floc sludge of wastewater treatment.Surface charge of ABR granular sludge is greater than the value of floc sludge as whole.ABR sludge do better in flocculation.Partical size of ABR sludge is larger than floc sludge,has a Median diameter between 0.75mm~1mm.One-dimensional fractal dimensions(D1) of ABR is 1.02~1.10 which is not as big as the floc sludge's,reflecting the ABR sludge has smoother surface. And the two-dimensional fractal dimensions(D2) of ABR are larger than the D1.D1 and D2 curves clearly show the icon in the law of mirror symmetry.The D2 of granular sludge and floc sludge is generally similar,indicating that the two are basically the same tightness sludge.This study established methods and procedures to learn fractal dimensions of ABR granular sludge and floc sludge.The research discuses the relations of macronomic performace,physical propertics and fractal dimension of ABR sludge, to provide a reliable indicator to the ABR start-up.Analysis the different characters of ABR sludge and floc sludge from wastewater treatment,and help to provide data to the future research.With the socio-economic development and population rise,a large number of domestic sewage and industrial waste water generated is far greater than the speed of adjustment ability of natural water bodies,the growing shortage of available water resources makes that wastewater treatment as a necessary objective.The results of this study provide reference to the further explore of wastewater treatment technology.
