Nitrophenols are important and one of multi-purpose industrial organic compounds, widely presented in industrial wastewater, such substances in environment can cause serious public health and environmental issues, some of such substances are teratogenic or with carcinogenic effects, and bio-accumulate in the food chain. In this study, start the UASB reactor with adding activated carbon, degrade p-nitrophenol (4-NP) wastewater, study treatment effect of UASB reactor degrade 4-NP wastewater at moderate temperature condition, master reactor operating parameters. The results show that UASB reactor start the process of adding activated carbon, granular sludge has significantly accelerated the process and shorten the start-up time, and granular sludge wsa large particle size. UASB reactor operating stability, and hydraulic impact load is significantly better than the reactor no adding activated carbon. In the study with single 4-NP Carbon source, treatment with low concentration 4-NP waste water, UASB reactor with adding activated carbon is not superior, but in the treatment with high concentration (300mg/l) 4-NP wastewater, its operation stability, anti-toxic, adaptability is advantaged. Adding a certain amount of activated carbon can ease the impact of 4-NP, improve the stability of reactor, but the activated carbon played only a temporary role. In the anaerobic system, even treating with high concentrations of 4-NP, 4-NP can be quickly restored to 4-AP, under the conditions of UASB reactor at moderate temperature degradation of low concentration (below 200mg/l) 4-NP is feasible. Under considering COD removal result, 4-NP removal result (assuming the target for water: the removal result of COD is than 80%, 4-NP removal result is than 90%), the best conditions of 4-NP degradation in the UASB reactor at moderate temperature are: 4-NP concentration is 200mg/l, HRT is 24h, corresponding to OLRs is 0.36kgCOD/(m3?d), 4-NP removal result of 93.7% are achieved, COD removal result of 81.5% are achieved.
