"Urban river"means river pass by or surround the city and it is also include the artificial river like canal. Urban river is the important geographical element and ecosystem corridor of the city. Healthy river ecosystem is acknowledged as the object of river management. Thus, the study on urban river issues in terms of river ecosystem health theory is of great significance in the theory and practice. This paper generalized the concept of ecosystem health and introduced the basic theory and the developing process of ecosystem health assessment. And based on this, we introduced the theoretical framework of river health and the basic method of river health assessment. And take the Changsha section of Xiangjiang River in Hunan province as an application. We Established an Index System and use Analytic Hierarchy Process to evaluate the weight of each index.The index system for ecosystem health assessment is complicated by some uncertainty isues in ecological planning and social development.The purpose of this study is to tackle uncertainties in determining the index system of ecosystem health asesment.After analyzing large amounts of unknown variability of the index system,and adopting the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process(AHP),we proposed an integrated fuzzy asesment model for urban river ecosystem.A three-level indicator system of river ecosystem health assessment was developed,which included ecological identity indicators,integrated functions indicators and social influence indicators.According to "healthy, healthier, general sick, sick"4 levels of assessment criteria, the fuzzy synthesis assessment model was put forwarded. Furthermore,the method was applied,as fl case study,to the ecosystem health asesment of Xiangjiang River,Changsha city.The research result has shown that its health grad is 0.582,which is close to sick and need to be guarded against.It has also suggested that the assesment model can provide decision making basis for ecosystem protection,maintenance and restoration.
