Electronic ink display as one of the electronic paper technologies has been the subject of intense research and development for applications in creating a flexible low-cost paper-like display. Elecrtonic ink displays are fully reflective type display devices, which utilize electrophoretic phenomena of charged pigment particles dispersed in a colored solvent. Microencapsulated electronic ink concerns numerous microcapsules which is applied to encapsulate electrophoretic medium containing electrophoretic particles, suspension medium, charge control agent, dispersion stabilizing agent.The paper mainly covers the preparation and characterization of the electrophoretic microcapsules.In order to prepare electrophoretic microcapsules with excellent properties, electrophoretic microcapsules were prepared via in-situ polymerization using urea-formaldehyde resin as the wall materials, and some influencing factors of the experiment were also studied. Microcapsules were characterized on structure, mean particle size, size distribution and morphology. The resulted microcapsules were clear, round, transparent, flexible and uniformly distributed, with a mean diameter of 10μm, and a good sealing property.The results show that while urea /formaldehyde=1.5~2.0(molar ratio), pH=8.0, T=70°C, t=1.5h, the urea-formaldehyde prepolymer is prepared; and while 0.039g Tween-80 as emulsifier, 0.1M HCl as acid catalyst, pH was at 1.5, stirring speed at 600~800r/min, dropping speed of acid catalyst is 3.0mL/min, the prepared microcapsules have many merits, such as smooth surface, transparence, good dispersibility and complete morphology, etc.
