Polyoxometalates (POMs), known as a class of traditional functional molecular units, have been attracting special research interest due to their significant applications in given fields and distinctive topological structures. Chemists and materials scientists pay more attention on this field. Inspired by afore research, we summarized the substantial literature based on the Keggin and Well-Dawson polyoxometalate and rare earth for nearly a decade on this paper, which primarily focus on its structural characteristics, synthesis methods, as well as their potential application in magnetic and fluorescence area.Synthetic methods of polyoxometalate with rare earth elements include synthesis in aqueous solution, synthesis in non-aqueous solution, hydrothermal synthesis and solid state synthesis. The reported polyoxometalate with rare earth elements can be divided in term of Re:POM mole ratio into following types: 1:1, [{Gd(NMP)6}(PMo12O40)]n, [{Yb(P2W17O61)}4(C2O4)3(H2O)4]34-;1:2,[Pr(PW11O39)2]-1;2:1,K[Ln2(a-SiW11O39)(H2O)11],K3Na3{Nd2(H2O)12Cu4(H2O)2(SiW9O34)2};2:3,H7K10[Ce2(PW10O38)(PW11O39)2]·28H2O;3:1, (H3O)[Ln3(H2O)17(a2-As2W17O61)]?nH2O and complex multinuclear compounds, [As12ⅢCe16Ⅲ(H2O)36 W148O524]76-,[Ce20Ge10W100O376(OH)4(H2O)30]56- et al..These polyoxometalate with rare earth elements have varity of spacial structure, one-dimension chain, two-dimension layer and three-dimension framework. The rare earth elements combine with heteropoly-complexes which represent a vast class of inorganic materials with a virtually unmatched range of physical and chemical properties relevant for applications as optical, magnetism and catalysis are expected to be used for light-emitting materials, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) conversion reagents, magnetic resonance imaging reagents and high-activity catalyst, thereby it is possible to broaden heteropoly-complexes and rare earth applications. Researches based on polyoxometalates combining with Zr, Hf, Y are less and information about combination between polyoxometalates and zirconium, hafnium and yttrium which can provide new matter for study on new materials can obtained by the synthesis of new compounds. Actinides are not only the main fuels of nuclear energy but also the main ingredients of the nuclear wastes. Researches on polyoxometalates combining with of nuclear waste may provide new methods for separating and dealing with the nuclear wastes. Though some similar studies have been reported, the systemic reviews are few. Trying to obtain some regulation, we summarized this rising area in detail and preliminary analysis about this area could be seen in our paper.
