The processes of thermal weight loss of coal-tar pitch and pitch/carbon (petroleum coke, needle coke, carbon black) composites used as the manufacture of carbon materials are studied by means of TGA. The characteristics of pyrolysis condensation of coal-tar pitch and pitch/carbon composites are analyzed. The character of pyrolysis condensation of coal-tar pitch is compared with that of pitch/carbon composites. It is found that the characters of pyrolysis condensation of pitch/carbon composites are different with that of coal-tar pitch alone. Existence of carbon materials (petroleum coke, needle coke, carbon black) is favourable to the condensation reaction of coal-tar pitches and polymerization of condensed aromatics molecules. It results in the enhancement of coking value of coal-tar pitches.The pyrolysis condensation processes of coal-tar pitch and pitch/carbon (petroleum coke, needle coke, carbon black) composites used as the manufacture of carbon materials can be divided into three stages, namely, the melting stage with a few light components evolution, the drastic decomposition stage and the condensation coking stage. The characters of pyrolysis condensation of coal-tar pitch and pitch/carbon (petroleum coke, needle coke, carbon black) composites can be used in the determination of baking temperature-raising curve.
