The output of refined rare earth increases rapidly in recent years along with the booming production capacity in China. The treatment of wastewater, generated from process of refining, is very important for the further development of these production capacities; whereas, these enterprise capacities has been seriously interfered by their current lagging treatment technology. Improving wastewater treatment process in economic effectiveness, therefore, is a pivotal step not only for sustainability development of enterprise and environment but also for natural water resources protection.A new method to treat wastewater called New Gas Blowing Process to treat high amounts ammoniac wastewater was discussed and demonstrated in this report compared with a few current process technologies used in the industry. The ammoniac wastewater generated in rare earth refining is characterized with its complicated components, high ammoniac concentration and high amount of water. The report herewith reviewed sources of ammoniac wastewater generated, current treatment situation and technologies. The discussion is focused on technology feasibility, costs, efficacy, and effect to the reality to screen an optimized method out. Where in, the technology New Gas Blowing Process was mainly studied; The New Gas Blowing Process is suitable to treat high concentration ammoniac wastewater, and this process shows low costs, high effect, but without apparent negative influence. Therefore, the New Gas Blowing Process is concluded as a potential wastewater treatment process to be introduced to the rare earth refining enterprise.
