The net shaping technology is a new type technology with great technological meaning and economic benefits, and it is the hot spot and advance technology in the current metallurgical industry. The ESC technology belongs to the net shaping technology. It centralizes the metal refinement pure and the crystallization solidification shaping on one step, and makes the formed part not only has good metallurgical quality and solidification quality, but also has the size of form close to or even equal to the final products."Metal surface heated by electro-slag" is a new technology of metal surface heating skills on the basic of electro-slag casting. The surface of metal workpiece will be heated by resistance heat which is generated by current through the liquid slag. The aim is not to make the metal melting, but is to make the metal surface to reach a desired temperature for double-metal composite or metal surface treatment. This method can achieve energy efficiency.With the promotion and use of the technology of "metal surface heated by electro-slag", people have gradually found that the technology has broad application prospects. So it requires to study in-depth on the mechanism of "metal surface heated by electro-slag", which will make this technology applied in practice under the guidance in theory. This paper introduced the concept of electro-slag heating technology.The distributing laws of temperature, electric field, voltage, current density are analyzed. It is found that a high temperature region exists between the electrode tip and the roller. The heat transfer between high temperature region and the roller made the surface layer of the roller heated up quickly.This paper focused on the law of changes of the high electric field in heating system from the aspects of Volt,slag pool's depth,insert depth and the distance between electrode and roller which can describe the mechanism of "metal surface heated by electro-slag" much better. In order to validate the feasibility of electro-slag heating technology, plans and a lot of experiments are carried out on the HeXing metallurgy mechanism plant in NanChang. The results measured by several of equipments are close to the simulation results.Both the simulation and experiment results show that in the process of metal surface heated by electro-slag the high dense current between the electrode and metal material become the high heat source region when the metal surface is heated up soon. This heating method on the surface of metal has many advantages of heating-up quickly, energy conservation and so on. So the using foreground of "metal surface heated by electro-slag" is optimistic. It can not only used in the composite roller, but also in other areas such as ESHT technology, metal heat-treatment etc. So it can inaugurate a new method on metal surface heating field when taking heat-treatment or compounding metals.This paper has great theory meaning and real value to the following experiment and manufacturing. It is significant to promote the technological progress of iron and steel enterprises and economic development of country.
