Abrasive machining is a key machining method for ultra-precision machining of advanced ceramic. It is very difficult for most of the abrasive machining methods to meet the high efficiency, high-precision, low/no damage processing requirements at the same time. Therefore, a semi-fixed abrasive machining method is proposed by Ultra-precision Machining Research Center of Zhejiang University of Technology to reduce or eliminate the surface defects caused by large abrasive grains and to improve the efficiency of precision or ultra-precision machining workpiece. In this paper, the failure of machining performance, the effect of abrasion and blocking, the durability and the dressing technology of semi-fixed abrasives plate (SFAP) were studied through experiments and computer simulation.This paper studied the characteristics of SFAP. It was found that the characteristic of material removal were the three-body abrasion and the two-body abrasion. The evaluation of physical characteristic of SFAP included surface hardness (50-61), elastic modulus (90-150Mpa). It was also discovered that its processing efficiency and processing quality are higher than the free abrasive machining at the same condition through experimental comparison.The style of the failure of SFAP's machining performance in processing was studied. Experiments showed that the failure of machining performance of SFAP was relate to workpiece material and SFAP in wet or dry status. Bond broken wear and SFAP' surface blocked up were appearanced mostly. And the SFAP needed to be dressed with the decline in processing capacity for its surface wear and surface blocked up.Wear and surface blocked up is studied in this paper through single factor experiments and orthogonal test. The effect of the wear and machining quality is separately analyzed by the characteristics and processing technology. The processing technology was optimized and the durability was analyzed.The dressing of the SFAP was studied by experimental research and computer simulation in this paper. A suitable dressing way and a removal model of dressing were put forwarded. The results showed that: the truing ring diamond dresser can dress the SFAP. 2kpa pressure dressing, 400μm diameter, 60rpm speed, 6 minutes is a better finishing parameter. Dressing the SFAP after 50 minutes in the processing can reduce the wear, and ensure the quality of the workpieceand increase machining efficiency.This research is done to provide technical support for keeping the processing performance of SFAP and recovering the machining performance of SFAP when it becomes invalid.
