Production profile logging is mainly to know the parameters of two-phase flow or multiphase flow with Different depths in a well, like flowrate, water-cut, temperature, pressure etc. It can find out the dynamic change and provide Dynamic data for geological analysis. In production profile logging of horizontal wells, confined by the measurement channel, it is much more difficult to transport the logging tools through the well than that of vertical wells. Therefore, improving the logging success rate becomes one of the most important goal. Using traditional turbine flowmeter to measure the flowrate in low production wells, the turbine will be easily plugged by sand, so that the success rate is decreased. For that reason, A thermal tracing cross-correlation method was proposed in this paper. The main advantage of this method is that the sensor used has no moveable component, can accomplish long time measurement and can also be used in sand production wells. The structure and measuring principle of the thermal tracing sensor was presented in this paper. Transition process of the heat flow in a pipe was simulated by using the FLUENT software. Temperature and velocity distributions in the sensor have been got at the flowrate 5 m3/d and 20 m3/d when the fluid pure was water and the oil-water rate was 50%. The prototype of the thermal tracing sensor was designed and produced, dynamic experiment system was fixed, and indoor dynamic experiments were carried out with pure water in horizontal pipes. The experiment results have shown that the upstream and the downstream thermal sensor of the thermal tracing sensor has a good correlation and the average velocity transformed from the sensor is linear to the given flowrate with resolution from 4 m3/d to 25 m3/d, which has explained the feasibility of using thermal tracing cross-correlation method to measure the flowrate in horizontal wells. This novel method may be well resolved the flowrate measurement problem of production profile in horizontal wells.
