Research was deployed aiming at coking in ethylene quencher of ethane cracking setting of a certain petrochemical olefins company. Model nozzle experiment operating parameters such as spray velocity, fluid flux, pressure, and so on were deduced and figured out basing on similarity criterion. The following was perorated in order to deepen our cognition of atomization and flowage situation in ethylene quencher(hereafter called spray generater), to better rationalize nozzle design, and to minimize the blindness and workload of experimental work, through numerical simulation of flow field in spray generater, using experiment model and pressure swirl nozzle designed by senior office member. Consistency of nozzle direction during fixation is especially important for flow field uniformity. Blow away should be avoided of the spray field by the high temperature gas. Therefore, velocity of both high temperature gas and the cooling heavy oil should be compatible with each other. Formulas of droplet diameter, jet depth, and minimum spray cone angle needed in designing swirl nozzles were deduced on the foundation of evaporation, heat transformation and geometry knowledge. Spray cone angles were collated after swirl nozzle was designed on the basis of swirl flow theory. Atomization and flux characteristics of swirl nozzle under different structural parameters and operating conditions were experimented using equipment of APV, LS-2000, and high-tech camera. Optimal parameters were perorated and relationship of flux, SMD, droplet consistence with nozzle's structural parameters and operating pressure. Formula of relationship of theoretic swirl number and actual spray cone angle was figured out. Experiment data were significant for design of swirl nozzle and spray generater and their application. Locale application was carried out of swirl nozzle designed thereunder experiment and numerical simulation and it turned out better in cooling than the nozzle they used before.
