The underwater welding process based on the rotating arc sensor is very complicated. The weld seam is affected by some process parameters such as: water depth, welding current, welding voltage, welding speed, gas flow and rotation frequency of arc sensor and so on. In order to gain the high-quality welded structure, the result of weld-forming need to be predicted successfully. In the process of welding the weld-forming, optimization of welding parameters and welding quality based on the rotating arc sensor is studied in this paper. For the special situation of underwater welding, a test platform based on underwater welding robot and rotating arc sensor is set up which can simulate different water depth(10~15m) for welding test. The underwater welding experiment is arranged through changing the 6 parameters and orthogonal test method. Establishing BP neural network model which is about the relation of parameters and seam size (between water depth, welding current, welding voltage, welding speed, rotating frequency of the rotating arc sensor, gas flow and weld width, weld penetration, weld reinforcement), developing a seam size predict interface by VC tool. The interface is easy to operate and has the high predictive accuracy and great advantages.Aim at the problem of optimal distribution of process parameters. The optimum welding parameters is gained through the combination of BP and genetic algorithm. Experiments show that this method has the advantage of accuracy and efficiency which adapt to the study of underwater welding parameters optimization.Combining with the characteristics of underwater seam, the impact of process factors on underwater seam is analyzed in this paper. Underwater welding test on two types of flux-cored wire is done and the welding effects are analyzed and compared which include the analysis on seam appearance, x-ray and statistical methods on internal seam porosity.A theoretical basic for selection of welding process parameters and technical support for the research on underwater welding quality are be get through this paper, so much time and material resources can be saved.
