Estrone is one of the most potent estrogenic hormones, naturally occurring in the human body. At low levels it can be toxic, and carcinogenic and a strong growth promoter. It has been reported that estrone can have deleterious reproductive effects including inhibition of egg implantation, suppression of spermatogenesis and impotence. Estrone is normally excreted from the human body entering the receiving water through sewage effluent. Although the estrogenicity of estrone is reported to be weaker than that of 17β-estradiol in the viteliogenin test in rainbow trout, it is found to be more abundant in the sewage effluents and river waters, thus requiring cautious monitoring for risk assessment and remediation. In this thesis, a highly selective imprinted polymer was synthesized by a surface molecular imprinting technique in combination with a sol-gel process, using estrone as the template molecule, 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane as functional monomers, and tetrahydrofuran as cross-linker. The factors of polymerization influencing were discussed in detail. The adsorption character and selective recognition ability of the imprinted and non-imprinted sorbent were researched by static and kinetic adsorption experiments. Results indicate that polymerized conditions had important influence on the adsorption character and selective recognition ability of imprinted sorbent. Imprined sorbent which were polymerized with the ratio of template molecule to functional monomer to cross-linker of 1 : 2 : 2 had higher sorption capacity and selective ability. It was found that tetrahydrofuran was the most excellent solvent in this experiment. Methanol was better as the adsorption solution when determined the loading capacity of the polymers. It showed that the molecular imprinting polymers exhibit higher adsorption capacity, speed and selective ability than that of non-imprinted polymers. The distribution coefficient(Kd) was 83 mg/mL and the saturated adsorption capacity( Qmax was 3.75 mg/g.The prepared MIP Was applied as sorbent for the determination of trace estrone through on-line solid-phase coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography (SPE-HPLC). The results showed that the imprinted sorbent exhibited good recognition and selective ability to the estrone.Based on a molecularly imprinted polymer, a competitive binding assay analogous to competitive enzyme immunoassay has been explored.
