With the improvement of living standards, the people's demand on living environment is getting higher and higher. Unfortunately, germs are everywhere, and many of them could cause the diseases and menace the health of mankind. In this situation, people pay more attention on restraining the growth and reproduction of deleterious microbe. Therefore the development and exploitation of new model antibacterial materials have become one of the interesting points of research. This paper briefly reviewed the progress on the research of antibacterial agents and roundly introduced the development, fabrication method and antibacterial properties of antibacterial agents on clay. In terms of the current development of antibacterial agents and clay-rich resources in our country, several antibacterial agents using clay as the carriers were prepared by ion exchange in liquid phase. The research work in this paper was described in detail as the following aspects:1. The preparation of modified clays with berberine hydrochlorideThe modified clays were prepared by introducing berberine hydrochloride into Na+-transformation montmorillonite(MMT), attapulgite(ATP) and vermiculite(VMT) via liquid phase ion exchange. The effects of reaction time, temperature and berberine hydrochloride initial concentration on the drug-loaded amount were studied. The optimum condition of the preparation was determined and stated as follows: reaction time, temperature and concentration of berberine hydrochloride are taken 5-12h, 80℃and 0.54~0.67mmol/g.2. Characterization of organically modified claysThe drug-loaded amount and structure of organically modified clays was characterized with different kinds of tests and measurement such as UV-Vis, FT-IR, XRD and TGA. The results showed that the drug-loaded amount of organically modified MMT was more than that of organically modified ATP and VMT. Berberine hydrochloride on modified clays entered the interlayer of MMT and VMT, but was mainly adsorbed on the surface of the ATP, and moreover, the thermal stability was improved. 3. Study on the antibacterial activity of modified claysThe antibacterial activity of modified clays with berberine hydrochloride was studied. The results showed that they had a certain degree of antibacterial activity against E.coli and S.aereus. Meanwhile the outcome of dissociating test indicated that berberine could be dissociated from interlayer of clay and directly exert its antibacterial effect on the bacteria in suspension. Moreover the modified clay after contacting with bacteria was observed through Gram staining and it was found that modified clay had an action of strong absorbing and fixing. Because of cooperation of action of strong absorbing, fixing and sustained-release berberine, the modified clays had excellent antibacterial properties.
