Phellodendron is a function of natural herbs and its main component is berberine which has excellent antibacterial properties. In this paper, berberine was extracted from phellodendron by the means of Ethanol extraction. The extraction technics was optimized and the antibacterial properties of berberine were characterized. The effect of microencapsulation of wall material selection, as well as the amount of emulsifier,skin-core ratio, phacoemulsification time, curing time, emulsifying temperature, stirring speed on the microcapsules were considered to obtain the optimizing preparation technics. SEM and particle size analyzer were employed to observe the morphology and measure the particle size. Microencapsulation products were distinguished by IR and the extended release property was also measured. Finally, the effect of the microcapsule finishing dosage, finishing methods and washing performance on the antibacterial properties of silk fabrics finished by the microcapsule berberine were tested. The results of experiment revealed that the ethanol extraction was a convenient and low cost way to extract berberine. The extraction is mainly composed of berberine whose UV-spectrum was same to standard sample. The SEM micrography showed that the surface of berberine microcapsules was smooth and the capsules were standard spherical when Gelatin-Gum Arabic was used for the wall material. Microcapsule size had a better rule that certified the products stability. The results of IR indicated that berberine has been the inclusion of gelatin and gum-arabic. Berberine microcapsules have good extended release property. The release profile showed an initial burst that resulted in release of 80% of the original berberine amount after 90min, then a slow and steady rate release of berberine in the following time.Antibacterial properties of silk fabric primarily were related to the amount of the berberine microcapsule, and the optimum antibacterial concentration was 2g/L. The pure silk fabrics, after 5 times wash, were still antibacterial to Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli to MIC. The studies indicated the potential application of berberine microcapsule in household textile.
