Nowadays,research and development of eco-textile is becoming one of the most important parts in textile industry with the increase of people's sense of environmental protection.The natural dyes have been paid more and more attention since they are reproducible,nontoxic, harmless environmental friendly and degradable.Prodigiosin is a kind of pigment which is made from fermentation.In this paper,the fermentation of making prodigiosin and the dyeing performance of prodigiosin were studied.Firstly,the fermentation process was studied,from which we find out the best fermentation technology.Then,the fermentation product was purified and identified to make sure that it is prodigiosin.Lastly,the best fermentation technology was determined as follows:the temperature is 28℃,the initial pH is 7.0,put 18g/L tween80 in,the fermentation time is 60h,avoid light in the whole process.About the applications of prodigiosin,its dyeing performance of dyeing wool and acrylic fabrics were studied.Through analyzing the effects of temperature,pH,and bath ratio,the best process conditions were obtained with which the dyeing fabrics have a good color and perfect dyeing effect.So prodigiosin has the potential to be used as dye.The kinetics and dynamics of dyeing the wool and acrylic fabrics with prodigiosin were analyzed,we came to the conclusion that the adsorption of wool belongs to Langmuir model,the adsorption of acrylic fabric belongs to Nernst model.The fastnesses of dyeing fabrics was studied,the results showed that the wet rubbing fastness was good,about grade 3-4,the dry rubbing fastnesses and soap washing fastnesses were grade 2-3. To raise the dyeing fastness,firstly,wool fabrics were treated with mordant before dyeing. Secondly,the fabrics were treated with chitosan and mordant before dyeing.After these treatments, the dyeing fastnesses were all improved.The dyeing fabrics had a great color change after modanted except with Al3+.The soaping and rubbing fastnesses improved greatly when the fabrics were treated with both chitosan and mordant,while treated with chitosan only,the fastness was not improved significantly.But these treatments had little effect on light fastness.The antibacterial properties of the dyeing fabrics were tested,the result showed that the dyeing fabrics all had good antibacterial performance and the inhibitory rate were more than 90%. After soap washing they all had a little decline.The fabrics treated with chitosan had better antibacterial properties.The basic properties of the dyeing fabrics were analyzed.The wool fabrics are hydrophobic fiber and the dye can't dissolve in water,however,after dyeing with the dye,the hydrophilicity of the fabrics was improved significantly.The reason is that the hydrophilic groups played a role with the aggregation of hydrophobic groups.The breaking strength and breaking extension of wool fabrics treated with ethanol in the dyeing process changed.
