To prevent parasitic oscillation in the disc laser media and improve the gain of the laser, Sm/Cu co doped phosphate glasses were prepared by traditional high-temperature melting, and thermal expansion coefficient, thermal stability,UV-VIS spectra and Fourier infrared spectra of the glass samples were carried out.The results show that the glass samples have smaller thermal expansion coefficient and better thermal stability; with the content of CuO increasing, the absorption coefficient of edge-cladding glasses at 1060nm first increase then decrease, which is connected with the content of Al2O3 in the samples; moreover, the absorption coefficient of Sm/Cu co doped edge-cladding glasses is obviously higher that that of Cu doped edge-cladding glasses; as the content of Sm2O3 increasing, many characteristic absorption peaks of phosphate glass move towards lower frequency direction, which indicates that a small quantity of Sm3+ play a role as network modifier in the structure of glass, and the phosphate glass network was destroyed badly, then chain length of phosphate was shortened. All the results indicate that the edge-cladding glass can prohibit the occurrence of parasitic oscillation to some extent in the disc laser glasses.
