Monolithic mesoporous carbon has been prepared by using monolithic cordierite as a support, triblock copolymer F127 as a structure directing agent, low-polymerized phenolic resins as carbon sources via the evaporation induced self-assembly route. The monolithic mesoporous carbon is used as adsorbent in removal of organic pollutants in water. The thesis is composed of four chapters. The first chapter focuses on the question proposing that is the monolithic mesoporous carbon adsorbent and its related research.Chapter 2 introduces the preparation of monolithic mesoporous carbon. Monolithic mesoporous carbon is prepared by using triblock-copolymer F127 as a structure directing agent, low-polymerized phenolic resins as carbon sources, cordierite as a support via the evaporation induced self-assembly route.. Characterization of XRD and TEM reveals that monolithic mesoporous carbon after carbonized at 900 oC possesses the ordered 2D hexagonal mesostructure. Nitrogen adsorption techniques shows that the monolithic mesoporous carbon has a large surface area (494 m2/g), large pore volume (0.4 cm3/g) and wide range pore size (2– 10 nm), the most probable of which is 3.9 nm.In Chapter 3, monolithic mesoporous carbon and powdered carbons materials are used as adsorbents. The adsorbed amount of monolithic carbons for p-chlorophenol and p-chloroaniline in water is 200 mg/g and 178 mg/g, respectively, slightly lower than that of powdered mesoporous carbons. The advantages of monolithic mesoporous carbon is easy separation from water, high reusability and high stability. More than 100 repeated times can be achieved without obvious loss in adsorption capacity and weight.Chapter 4 is the prior study for the monolithic mesoporous C/SiO2-Al2O3 nanocomposite. Powdered mesoporous C/SiO2-Al2O3 nanocomposite is synthesized by using resols as carbon precursors, tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and aluminum isopropoxide as inorganic precursors, and triblock copolymer F127 as a template. Mesoporous C/SiO2-Al2O3 nanocomposite has the ordered mesostructure, and tetrahedrally coordinated Al in the silica framework.
