Helical surfaces has a broad application background in engineering, such as the Archimedes helical surface and involute profile helical surfaces are commonly used for worm gears, bevel wheel and screw compressor rotor core profile face, drill and milling cutter's chip flute. At present, people process helical surfaces roughly using finger milling cutter. it is low productivity, high tool consumption and costly. With the increasing of helical surfaces as a working mechanism of the body surface, finger milling cutter for machining tool of helical surfaces is not suit to the actual processing of requests . Processing helical with indexable form disc cutter is not only greatly enhanced the helical surfaces processing efficiency but also satisfy processing precision, is a research direction of helical surfaces machining and the development of tool industry.On the basis of analyzing the theory of forming method of the milling helical surface, this paper presents contact condition equation and calculates the slope angle of discrete points on end cuspidate of workpieces based on the accumulated chord length cubic parametric spline method and offers mathematical model of the cutter profile. According to the data of end cuspidate of circular arc workpiece and involute workpiece, the paper programmes the whole solving process of the cutter profile by Matlab software. For different cutter of different workpieces, the article uses carbide inserts to fit the profile of the cutter by linear fitting algorithm and analyses the position and cutting accuracy by Matlab software and obtains the ordinate value of the basic point which satisfies error requirement of roughing. On the basis of fitting the profile of cutter, the paper presents the space location of the insert pocket according to relation of spatial position and cutting angles among cutter body, insert, insert groove and circular distribution among insert, insert groove and chip pocket. Finally, according to structural design data, using UG software found the three-dimensional modeling of the cutter. Through parts of the assembly model, the article check up reasonable configuration and interference among the various components of the milling cutter.
