Continuous casting has been one of the important molding technologies during the course of steel making in modern times. And the mould is the core of continuous casting machine. The taper of mould plays important role in raising output, improving the billt quality and prolonging the mould lifespan in the course of continuous casting. The mathematical model of mould had been studied for many years, but the mould taper could hardly be calculated by mathematical model. Hence, the development of mathematical model which could response mould taper correctly is significant.The numerical simulation of round billet in solidification process is studied in this paper.Then the model of thermo-stress for round billet was developed with considering the material thermo-properties relating to temperature.Temperature distribution, shell growth and shrinkage of round billet under different kinds of steel and speed are simulated. The simulation results showed that, the thickness of billet becomes thinner, the shrinkage of shell is lower and the temperature of billet hightens with the increasing of casting speed.At the same billet and casting speed, the billet temperature, thickness, shrinkage of the low carbon steel will higher than the medium carbon steel.The numerical simulation of mould in continuous casting of round billet is studied in this paper. Then the model of thermo-stress for mould was developed with considering stress condition of mould and the material thermo-properties relating to temperature.The simulation results showed that the temperature of the mould hot and cold face will be higher and the displacement of mould will be larger, when the casting speed is increasing. The temperature,displacement of the mould hot and cold face of the low carbon steel will lower than the medium carbon steel in the same conditions.The foundation of the shell shrinkage and the distortion of mould produce the ideal taper curve of the mould. The effect of the different casting speed and steel on the mould taper is studied. The results showed that the ideal taper curve of the mould is a parabolic curve. The higher of the speeds, the taper is lower. At the same billet and casting speed, the taper of the mould in the low carbon is higher than the medium carbon steel.
