Based on axial symmetry of round billet, a thermo-mechanical model coupled with geneticcharacteristics of stress in the solidified shell is established. Heat transfer and stress analysis on thestrand in mould is completed by ANSYS. Q195、 Q215and37Mn5was analysed. Surfacetemperature, shell thickness, air gap distribution of billet shell in mould was studied with differentprocess parameters. The difference between regularity of shell growth and the solidified law isanalyzed. The accuracy of model was verified by the amount of mould cooling water and thetemperature difference between the inlet and outlet water. Finally, according to the principle of theminimum air gap, the mold tapers for Q195and37Mn5are conducted several optimizations.The results show that: Based on the axial symmetry of round billet, the thermal-mechanicalmodel coupled with genetic characteristics of stress can make the accurate numerical analysis of heattransfer and stress of round billet. Taking37Mn5steel as the research object, slab temperature field,solidified shell surface temperature, shell thickness, heat flux, the first principal stress of shell,solidified shell equivalent stress, pressure and gap distribution between solidified shell and mold areanalyzed.Different steel requirement different kinds mold taper, Q215is required maximum mold taper,followed by Q195. The minimum is37Mn5. The temperature of billet would higher, the thickness ofbillet would thinner and the heat flux would bigger when increase casting speed or casting temperature.Compared with casting temperature, casting speed will have a greater impact on the solidified shellsurface temperature, thickness, etc.With the same conditions, the lower casting temperature, the lower the casting speed will getgreater shrinkage of shell mold. After three optimization calculations, we get mold taper curve ofQ195and37Mn5steel round billet, the total taper is1.88%/m,0.77%/m.
