As the environmental problems become more serious, more attention is concentrated in SO2 emission. Flue gas desulfurization is a worldwide SO2 control method, and the activated carbon (AC) absorption is one of the most prospective methods. The problems such as low absorption capacity, massive loss during regeneration meet in the absorption process restrict the use of AC. In this research, AC is modified via impregnation to carry transition metal ions (Cu2+,Fe3+,Co2+) to be a cheap, efficient and practical absorbent.Through scanning electron microscopy and heating test in microwave field, the results show that the modification effect of transition metal ion compared with non-modified AC. Then use the modified AC as the absorbent to carry on the SO2 absorption experiment to know the SO2 absorption ability of modified AC. Based on the above experiments, the saturated AC is desorbed by microwave radiation. The category of metal ion, microwave power and gas flow rate are the main factors that influence the SO2 output concentration and SO2 desorption. We did several regeneration experiments to check the change of absorption capacity, SO2 desorption rate and mass loss of AC after regeneration. The results show that the optimum operation condition is that microwave power 500W, the gas flow rate 0.08m3/h, at 500s, the desorption completes and the desorption rate reaches to 80%, the mass loss of AC is about 8%. The transition metal ions promote the absorption and desorption, Co2+ is the best modification ion.The experiments prove that modified AC is an efficient absorbent, the microwave regeneration possesses several advantages:short desorption time, desorption ability and so on. This system has a prospective research and application future.
