We chose currently typical painting technics of passenger cars manufacture in Guangzhou China to investigate the emission characteristic for volatile organic compounds (VOCs). By referring to TO-14 and TO-15 measurement methods recommended by US Environmental Protection Agency, VOCs samples were collected by canisters and determined qualitatively and quantitatively for species by preconcentrator gas chromatograph mass spectrum joint instruments. Furtherly, the possible odor VOC sources of the painting technics were analyze. Finally, the methods of disposing VOCs were discussed in this study. The conclusions show as following:1. Emitted characteristic VOCs in the painting spray technics were trimethylbenzene and tetramethylbenze, inculding 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene,1,2,4-trimethylbenzene, 1,2,3-trimethylbenzene,1,4-diethylbenzene,1,2,3,4-tetramethylbenzene, 2-ethyl-1,3-dimethylbenzene. The range of their concentration was 10-120ppm, which came from the releases of rough painting and surface painting during painting production.2. The predominant odor VOCs released from painting technics were aromatic hydrocarbon compounds including benzene, xylenes, styrene, methyl isobutyl ketone. The range of their concentration was from 0.001-0.lppm which also came from the releases of rough painting and surface painting during painting production.3.The treatmental methods about VOCs contain: material substitution and terminal treatmental technic.4.The innovation was that we identified the odor molecular marks of VOCs for painting spray technics in this research, including 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene,1,2,4-trimethylbenzene, 1,2,3-trimethylbenzene,1,4-diethylbenzene,1,2,3,4-tetramethylbenzene, 2-ethyl-1,3-dimethylbenzene. However, no such controlling requirements for these VOCs were included in present national emission standards which resulted in the illegal enterprises might elude lawful surveillance by officials. Hence, it is inevitable that serious air pollution and nuisances must be happened to resident close to the factories.
