2Cr13 stainless steel is one of the most important structural materials due to its advantages, such as good mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. However, its insufficient wear resistance and oxidation resistance become the major obstacles for its wide applications. Preparation of ceramic coatings on stainless steel surfaces can effectively improve its oxidation resistance and wear resistance. This is because the ceramic materials have many excellent properties such as high temperature stability, good wear resistance and corrosion resistance, high hardness, etc.In the paper, a modified layer of ZrO2 was fabricated on the surface of 2Cr13 stainless steel by the complex treatment, ie, zirconium plasma alloying + oxidation. The effects of the alloying temperature on the microstructure and thickness of the Zr-alloyed layer were studied, and at the same time the oxidation behavior as well as tribological property was also analyzed in the paper. The microstructure, composition and phase structure of the surface modified layers were analyzed by means of OM,XRD,SEM and EDS, respectively. The evaluation of wear behaviors and mechanism was studied through ball-on-disc dry rubbing under room temperature. The experimental results show that: (1) The better modified layers can be acquired under optimized technological parameters and the modified layer has strong combine force because of metallurgically bonding between the alloyed layer and 2Cr13 substrate without spalling; (2) The Zr-alloyed layer formed on 2Cr13 stainless steel mainly consists of ZrFe2 and after the complex treatment, an oxide film which is composed of ZrO2, Fe3O4 and Cr2O3 are formed on the alloyed layer; (3) The complex treatment can greatly improve the oxidation resistance of 2Cr13 stainless steel and the weight gain of oxidation for 100h is only 1 mg/cm2; (4) Surface hardness of modified layer treated by both plasma Zr alloying and complex treatment is more than 2000HK and the wear volume after complex treatment is only 10% of untreated 2Cr13 stainless steel, exhibiting a significant improvement of wear resistance for 2Cr13 stainless steel.
