A wave twin screw element was designed on the basis of meshing theory and motion relation for co-rotating twin screw extruder by introducing wave screw structure in this paper. Melt conveying and mixing properties of wave twin screw element was studied through numerical simulation and experimental research. Melting process of polymer under this screw element was studied with visualization twin-screw extruder and clam shell twin-screw extruder.Flow field of wave twin screw elements and common screw element was simulated and studied using Polyflow. The results show that the distributive and dispersive mixing performance of wave twin screw element is better than common screw element, although property of melt conveying of wave twin screw element is weaker.The results of experiments on melt conveying and mixing process show that, grain size of samples from screw configuration assembled with wave twin screw element is smaller and the RTD of this screw configuration is wider. These results show that the distributive and dispersive mixing performance of wave twin screw element is better. Experimental results agree with numerical simulation results.Melting experiments of polymer under different screw element show that wave twin screw element is suited for being assembled at the melting zone, and that the length of melting zone is shorter using wave twin screw element. The models of melting mechanism under wave twin screw element were built.
