Particulate matter (PM10), a large proportion of which is fugitive dust from roads, is the chief pollutant of atmosphere pollution in Beijing. Therefore, the monitoring and assessment of traffic dust has important significance. In this thesis, road fugitive dust was investigated by monitoring of dust fall from 2005 to 2009 on some roads in Beijing metropolitan area, and also the dust fall of background. The difference of road dust fall (DFr) and background dust fall (DFb) was defined as dust fall increment (ΔDF). Based on statistics of the data, the dust fall changing trends of recent years has been summarized. Analysis and determine the possible factors and the correlation analysis has been taken between dust fall and meteorological factors. Then quantitative relationship between dust fall and meteorological factors was established and the linear regression equation was testified by new data. The results introduced in detail as follows:⑴Monitoring of dust fall is feasible to monitor road fugitive dust, and it can be used in long-term monitoring of road dust as an effective assessment method in the future.⑵ΔDF was highly significantly decreased over the past few years, both of the overall time series or average. There is no significant monthly fluctuation, only fall is slightly lower.⑶ΔDF from districts of Shijingshan, Chaoyng and Fengtai were significantly higher than the other districts in Beijing metropolitan area.⑷Weed speed and precipitation, among all of the meteorological factors, are the major factors which have impacted onΔDF.⑸Road dust fall was highly positive correlated with construction dust fall.⑹ΔDF was significant negative correlated with the street sweeping area.⑺ΔDF was substantially reduced during 2008 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, which implied that road dust control measures indeed had a significant effect.⑻Changes through the amount of road dust were caused by both natural and artificially factors. Compared with DFb,ΔDF was much less impacted by meteorological factors while artificially imposed effective interventions were more important factors.
