Based on the good biocompatibility of carbon materials, it had been proved that the feasibility to make carbon fiber (CF) as a biofilm carrier. The biocompatibility of carbon fiber had been improved via the electrochemistry method. The effect of modification with acidic solution was better than that with alkaline solution (especially with the sulfuric acid solution). The effect of biofilm wastewater treatment was better than that of traditional activated sludge.In this paper, the best surface treatment conditions, the factors that affect the biocompatibility of carbon fiber, and the application of carbon fiber as carrier of biofilm sewage treatment method were investigated. The electrochemical oxidation and liquid phase oxidation method have been carried out to improve the biocompatibility of carbon fiber. The change of its biocompatibility was studied by measuring the equilibrium moisture content rate, biofilm formation rates, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and chemical titration etc. The effect of biofilm treatment in the wastewater treatment process was analyzed through evaluating wastewater Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) content. The mechanism of carbon fiber electrochemical oxidation, the effect of the different treatment conditions on the biocompatibility of carbon fiber and the application of carbon fiber as a biofilm carrier were discussed.The best experimental conditions were gained:the concentration of sulfuric acid solution is 0.5mol/l, the processing time is 90s. The experiment results also showed: the content of surface oxygen functional groups has a great influence on the hydrophilicity and biocompatibility of carbon fiber. The effect of biofilm treatment is better than that of the traditional activated sludge treatment especially in low-pollution level of sewage treatment and short-term treatment.The biocompatibility of carbon fiber is not good with liquid phase oxidation treatment, because the nitric acid solution with a high concentration etches the surface of carbon fiber seriously. At the same time, a large number of oxygen functional groups has been planted on carbon fiber's surface. It is suggested that the liquid phase oxidation treatment can be studied deeply by choosing different concentration of nitric acid solution, furthermore, the attempts of simulation test of sludge cultivation and wastewater treatment at a lower temperature can be carried out in order to make it more capable of applications.
