Alkylphenol polyethoxylates (APEOs) is nonionic surfactants. It is widely used in the industrial and domestic application. It is fast degraded to alkylphenols (APs) by microorganisms in the environmental media. Although APEOs is not toxic substances, their metabolites are classified as endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). The environmental fate, toxicity and estrogenic health effects of the metabolites to aquatic organisms have been studied extensively in recent two decades. To assess environmental quality, the APEOs and APs were respectively determined by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS) until now. In order to simultaneous determination of APEOs and APs by GC/MS, the cleavage reaction conditions of APEOs were optimized and quantitative reaction product was investigated. The APEOs was cleaved with hydrogen bromide in the acetic acid solution at 150℃for an hour reaction time. The pure quantitative reaction product was obtained utilizing liquid-solid extraction and RP-HPLC separation techniques. And also, the electron impact mass spectrums of the products were explained with the cleavage mechanism in here. The quantitative product of the APEOs is APEBr with m/z=243. The detection limit of APEBr is 5 ng mL-1, It is possible that simultaneous GC/MS determination of APEOs and APs with low detection limit and high reproducibility from environmental samples. The method was applied and evaluated in real environmental samples.
