Beam pumping units are the most commonly applied artificial lift equipments on continential oil fields. With stepping into the late stage of oil recovery, oil production condition of several main oil fields show complexity. So that the two questions come out, one is that the load regulation of beam pumping units is too low, mainly between 40% and 60%. The other problem is the low utilization of beam pumping units, it is due to the pumping units chosen by normal method could not match the condition of work field. In order to find the reasonable load regulation of pumping units to make sure equipment selection more practical, the paper carry out study on beam pumping units life and reasonable load regulation.This paper does some invalidation analysis of beam pumping units, and draws failure tree. Then carried out theoretical calculation on each part fatigue life of pumping unites under different load regulation, and compared the result with workplace statistics, which verified the correctness of the calculation method. The fatigue life under different load regulation is calculated by reliability theory, then reasonable load regulation is determined between 80% and 85% in view of different load regulation economic life. Established a beam pumping systems multi-targets optimization design model with high system efficiency, low polished rod and high pump efficiency, considered the load utilization rate of the hanger position of pumping unit and reducer casing as constraint condition, and proposed a new selection method of pumping units. According to the examples, comparing with the normal model, the beam pumping units model proposed in this paper declined 1~3 grades and saved the one-time investment, and the method is more suitable to the situation of the oil recovery later stage. and has very important impact on energy conservation of the later oil exploitation period.Research results of the paper can provide important theoretical guidance and engineering application value for energy-saving in the later stage of oil recovery.
