The stability of the drilling fluid is the challenge to the drilling fluid technology, which needs to be resolved in the current and long-term. The internal factors affecting the stability of drilling fluid are mainly composed of drilling fluid, especially with clay minerals which is used to slurry drilling fluid, the solid phase particles in the drilling fluid are in a colloidal suspension system of the scope. They have smaller sizes, special volume effects, and a significant influence to the stability of the drilling fluid (in particular, the stability of drilling fluids at high temperature). The advanced technology of ultra-fine particles in drilling fluid is based on colloid and interface chemistry of nano-technology as well as petroleum engineering. There are some scientific bases for the cross-disciplinary in-depth study, because part of the clay particles in drilling fluid is between nanometer and sub-micron.This paper focuses on the merits of nanotechnology. Development and the current status of nanotechnology in domestic and abroad application of the drilling fluids are introduced as well as the process of preparation of ultrafine particles by using the methods of gas phase, liquid phase, solid phase. And conventional methods such as sol-gel method, micro-emulsion method, intercalate on compound method, and modified montmorillonite methods are used to obtain ultra-fine particles. Then the particle imager is used to observe the shape of particles, and particle size analyzer is used to measure the particle sizes and particle size distribution. Experimental results show that the ultrafine particles of metal oxides and metal hydroxides prepared at different temperatures have very different sizes. At a certain temperature range, the higher the temperature, the smaller the particle sizes; the methods of preparation of organic-inorganic ultrafine particles are relatively simple. However, under the same preparation conditions, the average particles sizes are larger than those of the inorganic ultrafine particles, montmorillonite modified by using water bath pot when has lower yield.
