As a new carbon material, activated carbon honeycomb (ACH) combines advantages of activated carbons with honeycomb structure, such as:large surface area, tailored pore structure, low pressure drop, high geometric surface area. So it has wide potential for applications in adsorption, storage and catalysis.In this paper, a series of ACH was prepared through bulk extrusion of blended coals (one is caking coal), binder and water, followed by microwave drying, carbonization and activation in steam. During carbonization step, Caking coal can produce large quantity of coal tar which can act as a high temperature binder. This could reduce produce cost and simplify the process. The properties of ACH were characterized by N2 adsorption, TG and compression test. Effect of process on the properties of ACH and activity of V2O5/ACH used in NO removal reaction were also studied. Main results obtained are listed below.1. Water content affects the extrusion of ACH. When water content is proper, the plasticity of the coal powder paste reach the maximum. In this paper, when additional CMC content is 5 wt%, adding 35-40 wt% water is appropriate.2. Coals'blending benefits for the carbonization of ACH. Coals' blending could reduce the temperature of CMC's carbonization, hinder the volatile matter's release of zhaogezhuang coal, and decrease the mass loss of zhaogezhuang coal.3. As a high temperature binder, coal tar is essential in carbonization. In this paper, there is at least 2.1 wt% coal tar in the ACHs during carbonization in order to keep the structure of ACH.4. The ratio of different coals affects mechanic strength and pore structure. As zhaogezhuang coal content increases, the mechanic strength of ACH is stronger. As taixi coal content increases, the surface area is larger, and the activity of V2O5/ACH is better.
