Ecological footprint is an important indicator to analyze the sustainable use of natural resources and has been widely used in the assessment on sustainable development worldwide. In this study, we collected the data of resources production, consumption, population, and land use from Erdos City Statistical Yearbook and Water Resources Bulletin database. We calculated the ecological footprint of Erdos City during the period from 1960 to 2007. The results are formulated as follows:the ecological footprint per capita has shown a gradually increasing trend, from 0.775 hm2 to 11.803 hm2 with the average annual increase rate of 30.29%, an increase of 11.028 hm2. ecological footprint of Various land showed upward trend, Including the ecological footprint of cropland, the footprint of grassland, the footprint of energy, the footprint of built-up land and the footprint of water resources all changed significantly, and the footprint of forestland and the footprint of water did not change significantly, in which the contribution of the ecological footprint is small from 1960 to 2007. The overall ecological footprint per 10 thousands GDP of Erdos City shows a decreasing trend, decreased 19.45 times, which is equivalent to the 19.45-fold increase of the utilization efficiency of resources. The ecological capacity per capita has shows a gradually increasing trend, from 2.111 hm2 to 5.566 hm2 with the average annual increase rate of 3.48%, an increase of 3.455 hm2. The capacities of cropland, grassland, forestland, energy and built-up land were all increased. And the capacity of water resources showed a slash-style dropping. Other types of ecological capacity of the land did not change significantly. This article discusses the reasons for the changes of ecological footprint and ecological capacity form three stages of development. We clarified the relationship between ecological footprint, economic development (per capita GDP), industrialization and other key indicators reflecting the economic development. We analyzed the relationship between ecological capacity, progress of science, technology management and the ecological environment improvement. The results also showed that the ecological deficit of Erdos City occurred after 1997, and the magnitude of ecological deficit increased every year. And the ecological sustainability index showed a overall downward trend. Since 1997, the evolvement of ecosystem was towards unsustainable. For 10 years, the ecosystem is in a weak unsustainable and medium unsustainable. In this paper, for various types of land, we analyzed the causes of ecological remainder and ecological deficit of Erdos City, the causes of ecological deficit was the energy deficit. and the demand for fossil fuels was far greater than the supply, which was the the main reasons for the energy deficit. therefore, highly dependent on energy was the main cause of ecological deficit. This article provided the strategies to resolve the problems such as intensifying regional ecological deficit.
