WEDM is a non-contact unconventional manufacturing process which uses thermal effect to remove materials of the workpieces. It has the advantages of high flexibility, high precision, etc., and is widely used in processing difficult-to-cut materials which have complex surfaces and low-rigidity. Therefore, it is significant to research WEDM-CNC which is high value-adding and will be widespread used.First, sketch of bidirectional communication and controlling of stepping motor is proposed for a WEDM-CNC system based on Linux. Low-cost and stable serial and parallel port is used to communication between PC and microcontroller. MCU and drive are used to control stepper motor.In order to achieve access and operation for subordinate computer based MCU, serial and parallel mode of operation are initializd and system call of Linux is used. It's designed a simple serial and parallel human-computer interaction interface using development environment of QT. This article uses the pulse distributor and the integrated power amplifier to actualize five-phase stepping motor drive. And it is realized MCU controls the motion of wire EDM tablel.Finally, the upper computer succeeds to control the subprdinate computer cutting table's motion via mands of serial and parallel port under debugging environment. Besides, the host computer will receive the feedback data of processing and discharge status from the subordinate machine, which can verify the feasibility that using serial and pararell port to realize the communication between the host computer and the subordinate computer of WEDM-CNC system based Linux.
