The rare earth elements known as the "Industrial oil" plays an increasing important role in contemporary society, it has been widely used in aerospace, magnetic materials, electronics, petrochemical industry, metallurgy, machinery, energy, light industry, environmental protection, agriculture and other fields. Hence, the need for purity of rare earth elements should have higher expectations. The separation and purification of the rare-earth elements experienced sub-step, ion exchange and solvent extraction in history. Researchers have extensively studied and applied the solvent extraction separation due to its high extraction efficiency, large capacity, good separation and high recovery, low reagent consumption, simple equipment and automating the production process easily etc. Many research topics in extraction chemistry has been proposed during the process of applied solvent extraction in production, and developing new extraction agents become the focus of application. Amide extractants have been considered to be the new substitute for phosphorus-containing extractants, its structure - property relationship has been extensively studied because of its large potential for extraction of f-metal elements. Currently amide extractants research in nitric acid medium has been very comprehensive, and other systems have not been widely launched. The amide podand which is the most promising class in amide extractant was investigated in this paper. The structure - property relationships and the effect of diluents on the extraction were also investigated. The main content was as follows:1. Synthesis of the two amide podand extractants: N,N,N',N'-tetrabutyl-3-oxy-glutaramide (TBOPDA), N, N'-dimethyl-N, N'-diphenyl -3 - oxy-glutaramide (DMDPhOPDA).The products were characterized by high performance liquid chromatography, infrared spectrum, nuclear magnetic resonance, element-analysis.2. The extraction behavior and mechanism of rare earth elements in hydrochloric acid extraction with the two 3-oxa-glutaramide extractants extract were investigated. The influence of hydrochloric acid concentration, extractant concentration and temperature on the extraction were investigated and the extracted species were analyzed by IR.3. Analyzation of the relationship between the extraction and the extractant structure show that,in hydrochloric system, the extraction ability of N,N,N',N'-tetrabutyl-3-oxy-glutaramide (TBOPDA) is higher than that of N,N'-dimethyl-N,N'-diphenyl-3-oxy-glutaramide (DMDPhOPDA).It indicates that benzene ring as Substituents on amide is unfavorable in extraction of rare earth elements.4. The extraction behavior of rare earth elements in 3-oxa-glutaramide extractants in different diluents were investigated. The results show that: in single diluent, the extraction ability of rare earth elements with TBOPDA was much less than that in octane-octanol mixed diluents,The diluents polarity is a greater impact on the extraction.5. Through analyzation the extraction of different metal ions, we concluded that: there is a certain relationship between rare earth ion's atomic number and the maximum distribution ratio. The extraction of higher atomic number rare earth is better.6. The effect of temperature on the extraction distribution ratios showed that all of the extraction reaction is exothermic reaction. Increasing temperature will be unfavorable to the extraction reactions.
