Based on the research status of Styrene-Acrylic co-polymer emulsion and water-based varnish, in connection with some present problems, by different polymerization methods, a kind of Styrene-Butyl Acrylic copolymer emulsion used as water-based varnish was prepared.With St and MMA as solid monomers, BA as soft monomer, AA and HEMA as functional monomers, SDS and OP-10 as emulsifiers,APS as initiator,and Sodium bicarbonate as buffer solution, by semi-continuous seeded emusion polymerization and by optimizing polymerization process and adjusting the formulas of components, it is manufactured as water-based varnish which is friendly to the environment. some influencing factors such as the type and proportion of monomers, emulsifier, initiator, functional monomers and polymerization prosess such as stirring velocity, reaction temperature are in-depth analyzed and in details discussed.The emulsion is characteried by the measurements such as TEM,DSC,FT-IR and so on,some measures about varnish are also made such as water resistance,hardness,luster,film,which provide a basic data reference for application of varnish . the test result shows that the emulsion has a clear core-shell structure and smaller particle size, has good luster,better water resistance, lower MFT and higher pencil hardness.
