In this dissertation, synthesis and characterization of multi-dentate ligands containing heteroatom, N and S were described. This research consists mainly of three chapters.In the first section (chapter 3), a multi-dentate ligand,5-(bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)amino)quinolin-8-ol(HL), was synthesized by functionalizing 8-hydroxyquinoline at the position 5 with bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)amine group. Its coordination chemistry with selected metal ions, Mg2+, Co2+, Cu2+, Zn2+ and Hg2+ were investigated using UV-vis and fluorescencent spectroscopies. Our results showed that this ligand exhibited selective fluorescent response towards Mg2+ in acetonitrile.In the second section (chapter 4), synthesis and characterization of multi-dentate ligands 4-(2-methoxybenzyl)-1,7-dithia-4,10-diazacyclododecane (L'), tert-butyl-bis(2-mercaptoethyl)carbamate (6) and N-(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)-2-(pyridin-2-ylme-thylthio)-N-(2-(pyridin- 2-ylmethylthio)ethl)-ethanamine (L) were described. For ligand L, its coordination compounds with some transition metal ions M2+(M2+= Cu2+, Co2+, Zn2+) were prepared. These compounds were fully characterized using UV-vis, IR, microanalysis. Their structures were determined using X-Ray single crystal diffraction analysis. Their electrochemical properties were also preliminarily investigated.In the second section (chapter 5), synthesis and characterization of some ferrocene derivatives were presented.
