Tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminium(Alq3) is an efficient green electrolumi nescent material, was first used as an electron transporter and photon emitter in organic light emitting devices by Tang and Vanslyke. The molecule has low photoluminescence(PL) quenching in the solid state, good electron mobility and good stabilility against recrystallisation as an amorphous thin film. Though Alq3 is used as good electron transporter in single and bi-layer devise, it has to be vapour deposited for thin film formation because of poor solubility. So a study on the synthesis of 8-hydroxyquinoline derivatives will undoubtedly help to develop novel Alq3 with specific structures. The main contents of this thesis are as follows:1. The synthetic methodology of 8-hydroxyquinoline derivatives was briefly introduced and the development of the Alq3 in organic electroluminescent devices was sressed.2. A novel reaction of diphenylamine and 5-Cloromethyl-8- hydroxyquinoline hydrochloride. The reaction of diphenylamine and 5-Cloromethyl-8-hydroxy lquinoline hydrochloride in DMF, has K2CO3 exist, 120℃,afforded a new 8-hydroxyquinoline derivative which has diphenylamine attached at the 5- position through–CH2- as the link. The compound was characterized by MS,1HNMR and elemental analysis. We obtained its single crystal, through single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis the new compound's structure was identified.3. A series of 5-substituted-8- hydroxyquinoline derivatives and their aluminum complexes was synthesized. These complexes have high solubility in many common organic solvents. The spectral properties of the aluminum complexes showed green luminescence, could be used in organic electroluminescent devices.4. We prepare organic electroluminescent devices by vapour deposited as the structure of ITO/TPD/AlR3/Al, Which were not satisfied and need to be optimized.
