In the production process of crude oil, the crude oil exploited from the oil well has certain moisture content, because the specific gravity of oil and water is different, the water in the crude oil will subside to the base of oil tank, and must be separated from the water in separation tank and finished crude oil with low water can be gotten. At the same time, the height of oil-water interface is the most important parameter which ensures the oil-water separation. Therefore, fast and accurate measuring of the interface is the key to make clear the quantity of water and oil output, and it also provides evidence to know the quantity and life of the oil well.After the careful study of present methods on oil-water interface detection at home and abroad, it is easy to know many of these methods'sensors are apt to be captured and are often high in price. As to such problems, this paper puts up with a new method, which takes advantage of the interface's color saltation caused by different color between oil and water to achieve the on-line oil-water interface detection. This technique not only has the advantage of solving the work problem and high price, but also has the merits of being fast in response, simple in structure, good in security and high in reliability, so it is a technique that has great value of practice and popularization.The whole instrument is made up of hardware and software parts. The paper has introduced the hardware parts' design algorithm and their function in details, and then given a lot of facts of designing the software parts. This paper also has focused on how to realize the upper monitor's control to lower computer throuth serial communication and then how to design the oil-water interface detection instrument using Visual Basic 6.0 Programming Language's visual control software. Finally, this paper has summarized the deficiencies of this topic and extracts some constructive advices for the further improvement.The characteristic of this paper is the adoption of color sensor technich and computer remote monitoring in oil field's production, and this paper also has proposed a new solution to the difficult problem of oil-water interface detection.
