High-speed cutting is an advanced metal-cutting technology developed rapidly in the recent decades. Its greatest feature is the high-speed and light-load during the cutting process. It can significantly reduce the processing time and improve processing efficiency by the means of increasing rotation speed, reducing the cut depth, quickening the feed speed.Combination with high-speed cutting mechanism, this paper systematically studied the formation of the chip, tool failure during the process of high-speed cutting and requirements of tool material. It focused on the selection principles of the tool geometry, cutting ability and cutting scope of the several common cutting tools.With the use of the orthogonal experiment, the surface roughness of high-speed machining was carried out to a systematic study. The data obtained through the analysis of high-speed processing of aluminum alloy LY12 indicated the impact of surface roughness in high-speed machining. The right order from primary and secondary was: cooling mode→rotation speed of spindle→cutting depth→feed rate. In the experiment, we can find the relations between surface roughness and cutting parameters, and obtain the empirical formula of surface roughness in theory.With the help of UG software, the high-speed processing of aluminum parts was studied in detail. The research mainly included: the tool path in high-speed cutting, principles of tool selection, optimization of cutting parameters. The dimensions and tolerances of the part were tested to verify the cutting parameters in high-speed cutting process. By comparing with cutting parameters and metal removal rate of normal metal processing, the characteristics of high-quality and high-efficiency the characteristics in course of high-speed cutting were proved perfectly.
