Space cutter radius compensation is an important function in 5-axis CNC system.It simplifies programming, and improves efficiency. Currently, the cutter radius compensation for 21/2Dcontour machining has been mature enough. But in the 5-axis CNC machining, space cutter radius compensation is more difficult because of the change of cutter's posture. At present, the research and development are still growing in our country. So it is necessary to research on it.5-axis CNC machining is used to complex surface machining. The cutter changes its posture while machining. There are two milling mode named peripheral milling and end milling. Based on these points, the paper concluded the research content of space cutter radius compensation. An reference model was presented, which is used to describe the compensation algorithm and relational variables. In this paper, an algorithm for radius compensation of a single block, a discriminator for the corner type and a transition processing method for the inside and outside corner are included. It mainly includes these points in detail:1. The research content of space cutter radius compensation. An uniform reference model used to describe the compensation algorithm and relational variables.2. The design on space cutter radius compensation for 5-Axis peripheral milling.3. The design on space cutter radius compensation for 5-Axis end milling.Besides, this paper also presents the theoretic analyze of the errors and the simulated results. With the contrast with another compensation method, we can see that the new compensation method can meet the system machining requirements.
