With the outstanding corrosion resistance, high HDT and fracture toughness, vinyl ester (VE) resins were applied in anticorrosion area home and abroad. In order to improve acceptable viscosity, styrene content and exothermic peak, low and high molecular weight bisphenol A epoxy resins were mixed to react with methacrylic acid by ring-opening esterification. This paper introduced the development, structure and properties of VE resins. The research and development on toughening, low volatile organic compounds (VOC) and blending technology of VE resins were reviewed. The factors which influence the reaction, such as ratio of raw materials, reaction temperature and time, terminal control, catalysts and inhibitors, were researched. The structure of VE resin was characterized by FTIR at different extent of open-ring esterification. The factors which influence the curing, mechanical properties and HDT, such as the ratios of low and high molecular weight VE resins, initiators, accelerators, curing system, were discussed. Various mediums such as solutions of acid, basis, salts, oxides and organic solvents were used to examine the anticorrosion of the resin casting. After the optimization of reaction conditions, MFE-11 VE resin was scaled up to semi-works production successfully in Huachang Company. The bimodal blends VE resins have lower styrene content, exothermic peak and higher fracture toughness compared with normal VE resins.Bimodal blends of VE resins have been applied in various industrial anticorrosion areas as raw material to produce anticorrosion FRP, resin mortar and so on.
