China is the largest producer of castings in the world. Recent years, the production of various castings is more than 30 million tons, accounting for about one third of the word's production. According to statistics, to produce one ton of qualified castings, one ton of new sand will be consumed, and one ton of used sand will be wasted. Calculated by this, both of the new sand consumed and the used sand discharged will be more than 30 million tons. If we don't reclaim the used sand for re-use but discharge them directly, it will be great waste of the finite resources, but also it will cause great environment pollution. Reclamation of used sand reduces the use of new sand, not only brings economic benefits for the enterprises but also reduces pollution of the environment.This subject is from the National Natural Science Foundation project:"Casting clay (mixed) for the old sand resin sand core regeneration mechanism and process of research", project approval number:50665004. This paper studies the feasibility of the usage of vertical planetary mill in the field of foundry sand reclamation. Vertical planetary mill is a kind of efficient grinding equipment. Due to its unique design, the materials can suffer combined effects of squeezing, shearing and grinding.At first, this paper detailedly analyzed the regeneration mechanism of foundry sand especially the grinding mechanism and the theory of vertical planetary mill. Then designed and manufactured the equipment for process experiments according to the relevant principles of vertical planetary mill, and done a lot of experiments about used sand's regeneration. Though those experiments, we found that:this kind of combined effects of squeezing, shearing and grinding of Vertical planetary mill has good effect on regeneration of mixed used sand. It can reduce the clay content of the mixed used sand to 3%(Clay content of untreated used sand is 11.8%), the rate of clay elimination is near to 80%. The parameters of regeneration which have the biggest impact on maxed used sand are:compressional force (relative grinding force), processing times and sand thickness. And we got the best of their range:the best range of relative grinding force is between 0.32~0.42; processing times should better be around 50; sand thickness should be between 1~3mm.Subsequently, this paper designed vertical planetary grinding wheel sand reclamation equipment that can be used for foundry sand regeneration, based on data obtained from experimental. Finally, this paper developed the virtual prototype of vertical planetary grinding wheel sand reclamation equipment based on virtual prototyping technology, and did the dynamic simulation with this virtual prototype. Though the simulation, we obtained the kinematical and dynamical relations that consistent with the mechanical model, which fully proves that the vertical planetary grounding wheel sand regeneration designed by this paper is feasible.
