With the development of science technology, some advanced technologies are gradually applied into manufacturing system. However, cutting work still plays an important part in the whole machine work. Further speaking, the selection of cutting parameters is important and complicated in cutting work. Whether it can be selected appropriately directly affects the cost and efficiency of processing, the utilization rate of machine tools and the quality of products. The selection of cutting parameters is restricted by processing conditions, work-piece materials, production time and production cost. Traditional methods of the selection waste the processing resources of companies because the selected values are too conservative. Consequently, how to select the optimal cutting parameters has become the difficulty of machine work.This thesis designs an expert system about the selection and optimization of cutting parameters, based on VB6.0 and SQL Sever2000, integrating PSO, expert system, MATLAB computer software, data base and many other advanced computer technologies, which provides a faster and highly efficient platform for the reasonable selection of cutting parameters. The main features of this system are the following:firstly, provide reasonable cutting parameters for users based on the interaction mode of human and machines (this mode refers to the combination of the processing information inputted by users and experts experiences stored in knowledge base system). Secondly, users check and revise the provided cutting parameters, then set processing aims (the maximum productive efficiency, the minimum production cost and multi-purposes), call MATLAB and finally achieve the optimization of cutting parameters and output more applicable cutting parameters.This thesis aims to finish the following work:1) Establish cutting parameters optimization mathematical model according to processing conditions and aims based on the optimization theory.2) Introduce PSO, write optimization program and finally achieve the optimization of cutting parameters based on MATLAB software. The optimization result will be compared with the traditional result through examples and finally verifies the rationality of the established mathematical model and shows the selected optimization algorithm is adapt to this mathematical mode.3) Learn basic theories of the expert system and set up knowledge base system based on the knowledge from handbooks, the previous examples of cutting and experts experience. Establish the systematic inference mechanism after analyzing all sorts of inference methods. 4) Based on the above theory, design the expert system about the selection and optimization of cutting parameters. Make use of knowledge base to infer and finally get cutting parameters referring to information inputted by users. If users accept the result, they need conduct multi-objective optimization to the result so as to provide the optimal cutting parameters for cutting work and ultimately increase economic efficiency and processing efficiency.5) At present, most of expert systems just produce results without analysis and comparison of them, which make users suspect results. An evaluation module is putted in the expert system, evaluate the results, and show them to the users. So users easily accept the results.
