Since the first non-governmental environmental NGO was established in China at 1994, China's environmental NGOs have taken their lumps during the past few decades. As a public group acting for environmental protection, under the circumstance of deepening impact of the environmental crisis today, they have not only played an important role in protecting our environment, safeguarding the environmental rights and interests of citizen and so on, but also become the third trusted force besides the government and the market. However, the reality indicates that the development of China's environmental NGOs is not optimistic under the effect of laws and regulations, social factors, internal capacity and many other factors, which leads to the weakness and irresponsibility of the organizations as a whole. Therefore, straightening out the basic concepts and current developing state of China's environmental NGO, learning advanced experiences from foreign environmental NGO and proposing the feasible options for the well development of our environmental NGO as well, are of important realistic significance to prompt the development of China's environmental protection and the changes of our democratic society.This thesis is divided into five parts. The first part is the introduction, which describes the significance of this topic, its related domestic and international background, the research methodology and innovative points of this work. The second part gives the definition of the concept and theoretical basis, particularly focuses on that of environmental NGO, which supports the emergence and development of environmental NGO. The development processes of China's environmental NGO are listed in the third part. It also includes the developing status of the foreign environmental NGO and mainly focuses on the background, the developing stage and status of China's environmental NGO, as well as its important roles in the global environmental and social governance. The fourth part examines the several current situations with analysis for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats to China's environmental NGO. On the basis of these analyses, methods are proposed to foster strengths and circumvent weaknesses. The fifth part studies the improvement strategy of China's environmental NGO and gives personal insights and a number of feasible options, based on the comprehensive analysis.
