Chemical protective clothing can protect the people who work and fight under the toxic and high temperature against the toxic gas and liquid and high temperature harm. As a high-performance fiber, PPS fiber has excellent heat resistance, chemical resistance, flame retardancy and dimensional stability. So it can be used in chemical protective clothing outer layer fabric. However, the applied research in this field is a blank. This research mainly studies the basic mechanical properties, flame retardant performance, heat resistance, thermal stability and thermal properties of the PPS fabric when it is applied as the outer layer fabric in the chemical protective clothing.Firstly, the basic performance and the change of the PPS yarn properties when processed at different treatment temperatures and different treatment time will be researched. The results show that the break strength, break elongation of PPS yarn fully meet the weaving requirement of the loom. And through the test and analysis of break strength and tear strength of the samples, the mechanics performance of the PPS fabric is researched. It is found the PPS fabric's break strength and tear strength can satisfy the requirement of the protective clothing outer layer fabric. The plain has the highest break strength, while the 1/3 tweed fabric has the highest tear strength among the five weaves involved in this paper. But when the single tongue method is applied in the tear test of the PPS fabrics, the yarn slip phenomena appear in the three samples with long floats. Those cause the poor result. In order to solve this problem, the trapezoidal test method will be adopted to compare the fabric tear performance among the samples. In the flame retardant performance test of the PPS fabric, it is found that the damaged length, the after-flame time and the after-glow time also meet the outer fabric's requirement of the protective clothing. And in the flame process, the melt drip phenomenon did not appear. In the experiments of thermal conductivity of the PPS fabrics, the thermal conductivity of the samples which treated at 100℃and 150℃are higher than those at normal temperature, but the 1/2 twill has the smallest thermal conductivity among the five fabric weaves which involved in the paper.Because the 1/2 fabric has a better performance than the other fabric in the thermal conductivity test, the 1/2 is the choice in the next heat resistance and thermal stability test. The results show that the mass loss rate, warp and weft size loss rate are increased with the heat treatment temperature and heat treatment time increase. The warp size loss rate is bigger than the weft's. As to 1/2 fabric, the break strength of the fabric is reducd at the 100℃, while increased at the 150℃. The tear strength of he 1/2 fabric is increased when the heat treatment temperature is 150℃, and the treatment time is 2hrs.The 1/2 twill is the optimal in the selected five fabric weave in this paper througth the overall evaluation of performance. For the three samples of the 1/2 twill, it is found that the warp density is 360 and the waft density is 158 is the best.
