The newly developed sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) can replace sodium alginate as a printing paste in cotton fabric reactive dye. In this paper, physical and chemical properties of the two pastes are compared experimentally. Results show that the new CMC can replace sodium alginate as a printing paste in cotton fabric reactive dye, and reduce cost of production with a good application prospect. In order to compare the physical and chemical differences among the new CMC, conventional printing paste and common CMC paste, two newly developed CMC, one common CMC and sodium alginate are selected and tested on terms of their properties. The physical performance indexes include CMC DS, pasting rate, rheological properties of paste, printing viscosity index, hydrability, dilution, compatibility to chemical additives and storage stability. And chemical performance indexes include reaction between paste and reactive dye, dye yield of color paste printing, permeability, color yield irregularity, contour definition, de-paste ratio as well as color fastness of printing.Experiment conclusions are as follows. The substitution degree of the new CMC is high up to around 1.7 whereas common CMC paste is only 0.7. The pasting rate of new CMC is much higher than that of sodium alginate and common CMC. CMC and sodium alginate are pseudo-plastic fluid. The new CMC paste has a hydrability and dilution similar to that of sodium alginate. New CMC has a better storage stability than that of sodium alginate. Reactive dye does not react with sodium alginate, and hardly react with new CMC, while it reacts drastically with common CMC. New CMC and sodium alginate have a good printing color yield rate with low color yield irregularity. However, the common CMC has a low color yield rate and an obvious color yield irregularity, besides there can be hungry area after washing. The de-paste ratio of new CMC and sodium alginate is fine and higher than that of common CMC. And color fastness of CMC paste and sodium alginate can meet production needs. The viscosity and PVI value of mixed paste of new CMC and sodium alginate vary linearly according to change of the mixing rate. The hydrability, printing color yield amount, color yield irregularity, the de-paste ratio and color fastness of printing fabric of the mixed paste can well satisfy production needs, which has little connection with the mixing rate.
